Family FAQ

You asked:

We're going to let our 16-year-old son have his own computer in his bedroom. Are there any ground rules we should set?

The Online Family answers:

If your son has proven to be trustworthy in the past, then come up with an acceptable use policy for his personal computer. Decide what activities are OK, such as using it for homework, creative projects and fun activities like games. However, make sure to set rules for what's not acceptable, like illegal music downloading or all-night instant-messaging sessions.

Next, negotiate some time limits. Together, decide how long he will be able to use the computer each day and set a specific shut-down time.

Here's something else to consider: Many Internet safety experts are now cautioning parents against letting their kids have computers in their bedrooms. Why? Because kids are increasingly being lured offline by predators through chat rooms or are even being persuaded to do inappropriate things in front of their Webcams. So it's important to realize when you're setting the rules that even if your son is trustworthy he could be approached and manipulated by people online.

Tech Tip

Avoid Computer Crashes

Your computer's disk directory structure -- which manages the filing system within your computer -- can cause hard drive crashes. To limit these errors, run your computer's "disk utility" to scan and repair your disk.
