Family FAQ

You asked:

Instead of buying a new computer, can I just add more memory to my current PC?

The Online Family answers:

It depends on what’s making your computer sluggish or outdated. Sometimes to revive your computer, it’s just a matter of updating your operating system (OS) with the latest version offered by your OS maker. However, that move might require that your PC have more memory (a.k.a. RAM) to run effectively.

So your best bet is to take your PC to a local computer store. Get the shop expert’s advice on whether an inexpensive memory card upgrade (anywhere from $20 to $100 just for the new card) is enough to modernize your computer, in which case they should be able to complete the upgrade while you wait. Or if you’re tech-savvy, you can buy more memory online and install it on your own.

Tech Tip

Avoid Computer Crashes

Your computer's disk directory structure -- which manages the filing system within your computer -- can cause hard drive crashes. To limit these errors, run your computer's "disk utility" to scan and repair your disk.
